In February, Aqus Community Foundation, Cool Petaluma and Blue Zones Project Petaluma hosted a screening of “Join or Die,” a powerful documentary about the decline of social and civic engagement in America. The response was overwhelming – our event sold out, and the audience was energized. This month we hosted another screening to an equally engaged crowd at Aqus Cafe.
Why is this film striking such a nerve in Petaluma? Because it speaks directly to something we all feel: a deep need for connection. Based on the work of Harvard professor Robert Putnam (author of “Bowling Alone”), “Join or Die” explores how participation in clubs, churches, and civic organizations has plummeted – and the serious consequences that come with it. But the message isn’t all doom and gloom. The film offers a simple, powerful solution: Join something.
The February screening at the Polly Klaas Theater was made possible by the generous support of the following organizations, which we sincerely thank: AAUW Petaluma, Aqus Community Foundation, Cool Petaluma, Scouts America: Troop 9, Petaluma Mothers Club, Petaluma Toastmasters, Peaceful World Foundation, Petaluma Woman’s Club, Blue Zones Petaluma, Danish Soldiers Club, Petaluma Blacks for Community Development, Petaluma Sunrise Rotary, Petaluma Valley Rotary, Petaluma Garden Club, Petaluma Choral, Hermann Sons Hall, Village Network of Petaluma, Rotary Club of Petaluma.
If you missed both screenings, you have another chance. The Petaluma Woman’s Club will be hosting a screening on Wednesday, April 2. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at petalumawomansclub.com.
“Join or Die” is more than just a powerful and timely movie – it’s a call to action.
