Women and the Search for Wisdom

Celebrating Women’s History Month, a month-long extravaganza of art, poetry, music, story and salons lecture salons begins at the Petaluma Museum and Library.

An extraordinary series of events is on the horizon as the Petaluma Historical Library and Museum is transformed into a wonderland of beauty during Women’s History Month in a celebration of courageous women of myth and history . From Eve and Mary Magdalene, Hildegard von Bingen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Joan of Arc, Kwan Yin, Frieda Kahlo, Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich, Veronica Franco and Artemisia Gentileschi to the inspiring stories of real life women and girls around the world who are doing astonishing things right now, a veritable banquet of examples of women throughout history who have embodied wisdom will be brought to life in image, story, poetry and song. Produced by Storyteller, Musician and Cultural Historian Kayleen Asbo, Ph.D , this month- long extravaganza will be a moving testimony to the power of creativity, resilience, and courage throughout the centuries. “We live in a time of increasing fear and darkness. It is essential to look to the stories of hope and resilience to give us the courage, like our ancestors, to open to life’s possibilities no matter what its challenges”, Dr. Asbo says, “ The stories you will discover just might change the way you see the world and the art and music will surely inspire your own search for wisdom as they touch you with beauty. We are so blessed to have some truly phenomenal artists and musicians of international renown participating in this event”.

There will be a variety of programs and salons throughout the month (see link below). The art exhibit can also be viewed during normal operating hours for the Museum. Featured artists include Shiloh Sophia McCloud, Paola Gianturco, Rose Wognum Francis, Nancy Castille,Irene Belknap, Sue Ellen Parkinson, Mickey Fernandez, Kristin Acuna, Flora Aube, Bernell Loeb, Meri Furnari, Elizabeth Gibbons, Elaine Chan Scherer, Leslie Curchack, Cecelia Fuentes, Lauren Catalina, Katherine Salassi, Susan Audrey, Sue Hoya Sellars, Susan Stewart, Lynea Bernhard, Loretta Farley, Karuna Grace, Alexandra Hart, and Karen Nardi

The Gala Opening Concert with wine and cheese reception is Sunday, March 4 at 4 pm, with limited seating and advanced tickets recommended. The Braslavksy Ensemble will be showcased in the inaugurate event. Honored by the French government for their role in maintaining cultural heritage, the Braslavsky Ensemble lives in Paris and tours around the world. They have recorded eight albums and been featured performers at world music festivals throughout Europe and Africa, including spectacles of music and spoken word at Le Theatre de Roi, Chartres Cathedral, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Basilica of Mary Magdalene at Vezelay, bringing the history of women across the centuries to life. Catherine Braslavksy’s haunting voice has been sought out for film and television projects while Joseph Rowe’s prodigious percussion technique has graced the stage with Hamza El Din and the Grateful Dead. Their particular passion is to follow the thread of wisdom in all the world’s traditions, and draw on a rich and diverse tradition of music that spans two thousand years. In this special program created to honor Women and the Search for Wisdom, they will offer a program that includes the 12th century Hildegard von Bingen, Troubadour music of France from the 14th century, ancient Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic chants and original compositions using first century texts in praise of of the sacred feminine which were recovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt in 1945. Of their artistry it has been said that they are ”astonishing in both musical breadth and emotional depth, an evening with Braslavsky Ensemble is not so much a concert asa profoundly moving and transformative event that will leave you connected to the vast expanse of history and the best of beauty that humanity can offer”
