Are your kids interested in actually playing with other kids face-to-face instead of on a computer/TV screen? Something that involves a little more complex strategic thought than Chutes & Ladders, Go Fish or Crazy 8s? Then have them try out “Strategy Boardgame Saturdayafternoons” – from 2-5 PM on the first and third Saturdays of each month, we’re encouraging kids to come by and try their hand at it with other kids.
Feel free to bring your own games (and if you do, it would be helpful to have parents help explain the game instruction to other kids), or check out what others bring. Everyone is probably familiar with games like chess, and the European games Carcasonne and Settlers of Catan have also enjoyed some popularity here, but most people probably don’t know games like Lost Cities, Best Treehouse Ever, Race For The Galaxy, or Viticulture.
In general, a lot of these types of games may be most appropriate for kids approximately 7 years old or older, but we’ve seen 6-year-olds play games identified as being for kids 12-and-up, so no restrictions here (aside from excluding kids that might be tempted to eat small pieces, etc.)
