Dear Poetry Friends,
I hope you’re all well and enjoying this beautiful summer weather while conserving water as best you can. Rivertown Poets made a tentative plan to return to in-person readings at Aqus Café in August, but we’ve changed our minds in response to rising Covid-19 numbers in our county. We want to keep everyone safe, so we’ll continue our first and third Monday readings on Zoom for now.
AUGUST promises to be a great month of poetry. Do plan to attend our second JULY reading one week from tonight on July 19th. Our features will be Mary Susan Gast, Poet Laureate of Benicia, and Hiram Larew, an accomplished poet from Maryland. Open mic always follows the features (three minutes per reader).
Monday, August 2nd – Meg Hamill and M. J. (Joe) Arcangelini
Monday, August 16th – William O’Daly and James Cagney
The Petaluma Historical Museum is hosting an online exhibit of the photographs of John Johnson, an amateur Black photographer who was active one hundred years ago. Rivertown Poets is working with the museum to help host an Ekphrastic poetry contest in response to the photographs. First, second, and third prizes will be awarded on October 1st at the museum, concomitant with a slideshow of Johnson’s work. Submission dates are July 15 – August 31. Poets must be residents of Sonoma County. Please check out the attached flyer for more details.
All readings begin at 6:15 p.m. Please sign up in advance at Aqus.com/online for open mic. We make time for 21 readers and often fill up before the Monday reading. I’ve attached flyers for each of the next three readings as well as the Ekphrastic contest.
